CAUTION - RANT - Traffic Reports

01-30-2007 03:18:38

Am I the oly person who yells at the radio :swear: when it is IMC and the stupid traffic reporter comes on the radio with the helicopter sound effect in the background saying "From skycopter X, We have a tie up on the interstate at Robinson Road and........"

Well maybe you do have a traffic tie up but don't try  /nono\ and make everyone think you're out there flying when your really sitting behind a microphone sipping a cup of joe! >:(

Makes me mad

I think it's funny when you are watching Americas Most Amazing Video caught on tape, and they are supposedly reporting from the helicopter, and they still put in the sound effects for the cars screeching tires and the crash sounds from the accident.

I know a guy who used to do the helicopter traffic report for some of the local radio stations.  At HAI he freely admitted he used to be 20 miles outside of Tulsa fishing when it came time to make a traffic call.  He would start up the helicopter at the designated time, turn on the radio and report, "Looks like we've got the usual backup out on the BA Expressway.  The innerdispersal loop is moving along OK and no major accidents to report at this time. Back to you Chuck in the studio.  More traffic reports from Chopper Dave at 9:00 AM."  He would continue to fish until the next scheduled report :)  I believe he told me he got fired from the job not because of the fake traffic reports but because he could never get the hang of working their specialized radio links back to the studio.  Seems he had a tendency to talk over the studio guy and break in with ATC calls during the news, etc.

I think it would be funny if they just beat on their chest when giving the report :)

In the market I am familiar with you will find the traffic helicopter flying when most, if not all, recreation flyers are sitting on the ground.  The traffic guys are flying daytime down to 800 ft. and 5 miles, and in high winds that keep most flyers on the ground.  (Night flying has higher minimums.)  Yes, Special VFR is required, but there is typically no problem getting that.
In fact, flying in these conditions is somewhat easier since there is less radio traffic with the towers in Class D airspace.  (The Class B towers have little recreation flyers anytime.)

I think the reality is that when its t-storming and just plain stupid to be flying they should just say so and give everybody the traffic report without the sound effects.

CJ...We used to just tap our throats when we X-mitted to the local unicom in a fixed wings....It would really throw off the guys at the FBO
