EGT for Robinson R22 beta 2

12-11-2013 02:28:31

Hello  I'm thinking of installing  in my R22 beta2  , EGT  digital instrument  of aerospacelogic , anyone has experience on what should be the normal engine temperatures ?
My mechanic tells me to install it as an additional control parameter of the engine and thus increase the security .
What do you think? I'd like to know your thoughts.
Thanks to all and safe flights  Franco

Hello Franco,
I have installed an EGT into an R22 years ago at the request of the owner.  An EGT can be a useful tool when it comes to troubleshooting a problem engine (provided its in the suspect cylinder or a 4 point EGT).  I questioned the owner as to why they wanted it installed, because on the Robinsons you do not lean the mixture at all during flight.  Most time the EGT in a fixed wing aircraft is used for that.  If its installed too close or too far away from the cylinder port, your temperatures could be all over the map.  The EGT can useful, but just how useful in an R22 is up to you.  Panel space, depending on how your machine is equipped, could be an issue.

Thanks  for information , I will install  EGT can be extremely useful to diagnose a malfunction  before an engine failure .
Melvyn you made a beautiful flight, you  departed  from Torrance ?  I was there for safety course 5 month ago !
How did you connect JPI EDM700 to record the consumption of gasoline ? Do you think I can  mount it  on R22 ?

Ciao Franco, the EDM has a bidirectional communication with an external GPS, easy connection and compatible with most brands. The installation manual shows how to do it.

I took delivery of the heli at Torrance. It took me 18 days to fly to Santiago, 95 total hours.

Regarding the EDM as a diagnostic tool, it is superb. It is possible to immediately identify a faulty cylinder and then by analyzing the data, verify if it is a valve leaking/sticking or a spark plug or a magneto.
When checking the magnetos, it is also outstanding as you can check every and all cylinder EGTs at a glance and be completely sure if all of them are firing right.

The instrument can provide early warnings of impending problems. Sticking exhaust valves being one of them, faulty spark plugs, out of timing or faulty magnetos. As it is measuring different parameters, there is a far better chance to detect problems in advance.

I forgot to mention that the fuel flow function needs a fuel flow transducer to be installed between the gascolator and carburetor. Easy installation too.

Ciao, Melvyn
