R22 14 volt system and 12 volt battery

11-22-2013 07:15:34

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but...Is the reason for having the 14 volt electrical system in the R22 & R44 raven I Is that the alternator can charge the 12 volt battery at 14 volts?

Thank you

Ryan, welcome to the forum. Yes, a 12 volt system charges at 14 volts or there abouts.

The average "12 volt" battery usually retains a charge of around 13.8 volts be it automotive or aircraft. Automotive manufacturers have always chosen to call it 12 volts and aviation has always chosen to call it 14 volts. Same goes for the "24 volt" vs 28 volt systems. Good question though. I have been an A&P for 30 years and only got that answer explaned to me about 10 hears ago.
