R44 II 2013 vibrations

07-03-2014 07:24:14

After 1 year inspection and having the main rotor blades tip painted, the helicopter developed a significant vibration.
Found the blades have gone out of balance. In addition the cooling fan also went out of balance. Notices that start up is difficult and requires a long (15 -20 seconds) starter. No indication of over speed, hard landing or over torque.
Blades look ok with no significant findings, all systems tested ok.
The R44 II is one year old with TT 64 hours.
Any idea as to what could have been the cause of the problem?

After further checks all systems are ok. It seems that the blades edge paint may be the cause of the problem!

I had a similar experience.
I it turned out to be a start that was inadvertently done with the throttle wide open.
Spun the fan, you could see the evidence in the difference in the paint around the fan bolts.

By blade tips, do you mean the yellow tip of the blade? It seems ok!

Use a different inspection station. Try switching the blade tips. Get the blades and cooling fan balanced again.

Seems that to much paint on the main blade leading edge was the main problem and that the aux. fuel pump is damaged. Balanced the blades and ordered new pump from Robinson. Hope that all will be well now.
